Section 5. APPARATUS
RESPONSE
1. Apparatus will respond in the order listed for that
type of incident unless an officer or situation dictates otherwise. This is
necessary so that the first due apparatus for that type of call can be placed in
the most advantageous position.
2. Each unit should respond with a minimum of 2 PVFD
personnel with the exception of the engine which should be 3 and a minimum of 2.
If only enough PVFD personnel arrive at the station to staff one unit and
depending on the type of call then consider each member taking a unit then form
a team upon arrival at scene. PVFD Personnel shall mount the appropriate
apparatus and respond. No need to wait for assignments.
3. PVFD officer(s) should not drive apparatus unless there
are no qualified PVFD personnel available. PVFD officer or most qualified PVFD
personnel needs to be in the officer’s seat (front passenger seat) so he/she can
assist driver by watching for traffic and other hazards, looking for address,
handle radio communications, siren, formulate a plan, establish attack mode and
direct incident operations upon arrival. Exception is Brush or Rescue units. In
the brush unit, the PVFD officer or most qualified PVFD personnel should drive
so that he/she can maintain radio communications to direct incoming units and
operations while firefighter is engaged in fire operations.
4. ALL personal shall place their PAT on the apparatus
response board.
5. SEAT BELTS ARE TO BE
WORN AT ALL TIMES. Driver of apparatus will have responsibility of making sure
all occupants have their seat belt on before moving apparatus. If incident
requires SCBA then it shall be donned and seatbelts fastened by the time unit
reaches 156 after crossing tracks or 2449 via Fredricks.
6. Apparatus and POV(s)
will be driven in a manner according to weather, road conditions, driving
experience and ability that will allow the driver to maintain the vehicle under
control at all times. Remember, if we do not get to the scene we can’t do
anything.
7. Apparatus will run
with headlights on at all times.
8. All emergency
warning lights/devices will be on when responding to an emergency unless PVFD
officer or situation dictates otherwise (control burn with no endangerment, fire
alarm with nothing showing, investigative type calls).
9. When responding to a
domestic dispute or suicide call, stage appropriately until scene is cleared by
the police. Turn of warring devices when staging unless apparatus is in a
position that would present a hazard to the public
10. Returning from a
Call:
It shall be the responsibility of the driver to insure that all equipment is
accounted for and in its appropriate location, fuel and water tanks are full,
and report any equipment left behind or damaged to a PVFD officer. This shall be
a team effort.
11. Winter Operations:
When temperatures get close to freezing, use the following procedures:
E650, T650, T651 when on scene put pump in pump gear and re-circulate water.
B650, B651, have re-circulating prior to leaving station.
Close station doors
12. Backing Apparatus:
Anytime vision is obscured, in tight quarters (i.e. station), or when the driver
feels the need, there shall be at least one person positioned at the rear of the
apparatus and can be seen by the driver via the mirror(s) for guidance
