Section 10. FOAM OPERATIONS

1. Currently PVFD has two 1 ½ 95 gpm eductors. In order to obtain the proper application rate and concentration of finished foam, the nozzle gpm is required to match the eductors rated gpm. At this time we have two types of fog nozzles for this operation. The red tip fog nozzles are rated at 95 gpm from the factory. The blue tip nozzles are adjustable gallonage and must be set at 95 gpm prior to flowing foam. There should be no more than 150’ of 1 ¾ hose between the eductor and the nozzle. Pump discharge pressure (PDP) for foam line(s) needs to be 200 psi to the eductor. To make this calculation easy, the eductor should be connected directly to one of the 2 ½” discharges then all that is required is to increase PDP to 200 psi.

    2. PVFD also has a master stream self educting foam nozzle that will attach to the PVFD deck gun. It has percentage settings for either ½ % or 1% and a GPM range of 250, 500 and 750. The half percent is used for Class A foam applications and the 1% is for Class B. Since it is a fog nozzle, it requires 100 psi nozzle pressure for proper operation.

    3. The Class B foam concentrates we have on hand are rated at 1% for hydrocarbon fires and 3% for alcohol based fires. In order to keep operations simple we will use a 3% setting on the eductors for all flammable liquid fires unless otherwise dictated by OIC. Exception is the master stream self educting foam nozzle which only goes to 1%. When applying Class B foam it is imperative that PVFD personnel are manning the eductor at all times with foam buckets open and ready for use. It does not take long for the foam concentrate to be depleted and it is imperative that the foam application is not interrupted.

    4. The Class A foam concentrates are rated anywhere from less than a ½ % to 1%. The eductors can not be used for this type of foam application unless a 1% application is required. Both brush units have Class A foam systems which have built in eductors to handle this type of operation
